Yet highly creative performance by artists and designers has been associated with tools that are somewhat difficult to use,11 especially when the alternative is ease of use achieved through preprogrammed and therefore limiting or constraining features. Creative people always struggle against the limits of their medium— wood splits, musical instruments have limits to pitch and volume, and so on. The challenges presented by IT have helped to stimulate some kinds of art and design—and artists’ responses to those challenges, from seeking better tools to exploiting the flaws in or breaking those available as part of their art, should help to stimulate development of new forms of IT.

It provides entrepreneurs with a stream of opportunities to develop and market new products and services, while benefiting from the research and development investment that the prospect of successful commercialization motivates.
