However, we had more hits than misses and, even though the unit only existed for 12 years, it made an impact upon the way that London is policed and, to some extent, the UK. We trained thousands of police officers and people from other agencies in crime prevention and problem solving skills. We had an input into national police training and sat on Home Office working parties. We lectured extensively throughout the UK and the USA. We helped create the Safer London Awards and we even won an award or two ourselves.
To their credit, the council responded quickly to rectify the mistake. The Parks and Gardens Department varnished the wood, polished the brass memorial plaques, and hastily returned the benches to the park with a suitable white lie about ‘renovation and preservation’ (which is why I’ve been kind and kept them anonymous). Now everyone was happy again … but the drinkers, and the complaints, remained. So what should the council have done? This is a book about effective problem solving. And problem solving is all about tackling the cause(s) of a problem rather than responding to the symptoms.
